batting those eyelashes
Foreword
Mascara is the most personal makeup product, where one's love boat might be another one's Titanic. In this post, we will discuss a viral new launch from YSL. This mascara has been featured on social media more times than I can count, so without further ado let's see if it is worth your time and money or not.

About the Product
YSL Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara (29 USD; Made in France) - is described as a "couture" mascara with an oversized brush that should give you extreme volume, lift, and length. Available in two colors (black and brown).
Packaging: similar to all things YSL, this product comes in a very chic black and gold tube with the brand's logo wrapped around it. You get 9 ml/ 0.3 oz of product which is a good amount for a high-end brand. The wand has sort of that classic pine tree shape that is slightly bigger in size than that of a traditional mascara.
Formula: the Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara is practically fragrance-free, which is unheard of by the brand (yet it is a decision we all appreciate). There are little to no conditioning ingredients in this formula, except for the Iris Florentina Root Extract (which is listed last, so its actual content is minimal).
Texture: creamy, smooth consistency that is neither dry nor wet. A good in-between.
Application: now, let's preface this part by saying that I have long, semi-lifted lashes that somewhat lack in the volume department. The "extreme volume" label of the Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara got me hooked from the get-go.
Compared to some of my other favorites, this mascara took me forever and a day to layer. The first two coats barely gave me any volume or shape, so I ended up doing three (which is something I never do). Besides that, it would glue my lashes together making them a bit spikey with clumpy bits peeking through. I had to use a lash comb between every layer to ensure that my lashes are nicely separated and wispy. Even after three coats, I felt like my lashes looked dull and there was not enough volume for the amount of work I have put into applying the Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara.
As far as bristles go, I have no complaints. However, I do think that the brush deposits little to no product with one coat.
Wear: although it is not waterproof, YSL claim that this mascara can be worn all day. Indeed, it is very long-lasting. From my experience with mascara, this was the most difficult formula to rinse off. And I am someone, who is using heavy-duty oil-based eye makeup removers that tackle anything. Except for the Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara. Naturally, the fact that I had to go for three layers might be the reason. Yet even with one (barely there) coat it took me a few cleansers and micellar water to fully remove it.
Even then, traces of mascara were still in my eyes the next day.
who is going to like it
If you have been blessed in the lash department and look for a mascara that will mainly define your lashes in the most natural way and be uber long-lasting, you might love this one.
If you are like me and need actual volume and more definition, you might consider other options as this one alone won't do the trick. It just doesn't have enough bells and whistles to woo a lash-struggling consumer.
Verdict
Alas, the Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara failed to impress me. I had high hopes for this one, especially after seeing how often my favorite makeup artists were using it. Sadly, it didn't transform the look of my lashes in the way that I would have hoped for. Now, everyone is different and I have people in my circle that love this product. So take this review with a grain of salt. Besides little to no volume, I also didn't have the best time removing this YSL mascara, which is a big no-no for my sensitive eyes. All in all, I give it a C rating and would only recommend it to those of you who already have nice and fluffy lashes. For my fellow lash-struggling friends, I suggest checking out my The Battle Of The Mascaras posts here and here where I go through a lot of popular options in one go.
