Hanskin Soonhan Houttuynia Calming Essence Toner (22.40 USD; Made in Korea) - is described as a soothing, skin-calming toner containing 97.5% Heartleaf Houttuynia Extract.
Packaging: an elongated tinted bottle made of thick plastic. The design is minimal and practical. You get 200 ml/ 6.76 fl oz, which is a generous amount. One bottle is likely to last you a very long time.

Formula: despite its large size, the Soonhan Houttuynia Calming Essence Toner has quite a concise ingredient list. The advertised star-ingredient Houttuynia Cordata Extract is at the heart of the formulation. While it is not something you ever see in Western products, the extract has been favored in many Asian countries for its anti-inflammatory, cell-renewing properties. The research hints that Houttuynia Cordata Extract boosts the immunity of skin cells as a whole, thus contributing to a glowing, healthy complexion. It contains a higher number of Polyphenolic Flavonoids, which slow down skin aging.
We also get Tromethamine (alkaline), Niacinamide (skin calming, hydrating), and Cocoa Extract (antioxidant).

Scent: the Soonhan Houttuynia Calming Essence Toner is fragrance-free.
Texture: "thick" water texture. The essence appears tinted (think green tea) but sets clear. While it is a liquid, it is not runny. So much so, that you can count the exact amount of drops you use. The consistency is neither sticky, oily, nor greasy. The essence spreads with ease and sets relatively fast.
Finish: natural skin finish.
Application: similar to a hydrating toner, you use a product like the Soonhan Houttuynia Calming Essence Toner after cleansers and before serums, moisturizers, etc. Unlike a regular toner, this essence has a slightly richer consistency and it creates a nice base for any other products you want to apply on top of it. From my experience, this essence paired well with a plethora of other skincare formulations.
Use a cotton pad to sweep the Soonhan Houttuynia Calming Essence Toner across your face and neck. Or, if you are like me and don't want to waste product, pour a few drops into your hand and apply it directly.

Wear: this formulation has a calming effect on my skin. Whenever it feels a bit sensitive (can be after the use of acids, retinol, weather changes, or plain stress) a few drops of the Soonhan Houttuynia Calming Essence Toner save the day. The skin feels instantly soothed, hydrated, and nourished.
This product pairs well with makeup and sunscreens. The sensation of hydration lasts well throughout the day. Does not clog pores and cause breakouts.
Verdict
If you are looking for a skin-calming essence, that also moisturizes and revitalizes your skin, look this way. The Soonhan Houttuynia Calming Essence Toner is a wonderful layering formulation that supports the skin barrier, reduces redness, and helps your skin become resilient against environmental stressors. Especially good for those of you, who prefer a slightly richer toner/essence consistency. If you enjoy the brand's Hyaluron Skin Essence (reviewed here), chances are you will fall for this one as well. I believe this formula will be loved by most, especially those of us with drier skin types. A well-deserved A from me.
